The weather heavily influences the generation and use of energy on the site. Electrical generation is dictated by wind speed and solar radiation. Heating demands are driven by outdoor temperature and electrical lighting demands fluctuate with daylight availability. Each zone of the building has its own temperature control. The base set point is controlled centrally, but users may adjust the temperature in their room by 3°C. Several rooms also have manually opening windows for additional fresh air. Exposed windows are shaded from the sun by fixed glass or aluminium screens and by deciduous tree planting, thereby reducing unwanted solar gains and the need for cooling.
