能源利用: Photovoltaic panels were installed on easily-transportable trailers to provide solar-electric powered pumps. The PV systems were chosen not only because of the fiscal and environmental benefits of renewable energy, but because the systems could be portable. The solar-powered water-pumping trailers feature self-contained power and controls, which power the permanently installed well pumps as well as the mobile toilet and cabana lighting systems. There is also a 20-amp, 120-VAC duplex outlet inside each trailer for auxiliary power. Each trailer includes 16 75-watt Siemens PV modules, for a total of 1200 watts per trailer.

Other energy strategies

In the fall of 1998, Assateague installed a ground-source heat pump for the park headquarters building. This pump is being used successfully in conjunction with a backup propane/natural-gas furnace.

The park has installed energy-efficient windows in all buildings (including ranger stations, staff housing, and the visitor centers), and staff continually replace old lighting with new, energy-efficient lamps and ballasts. Park staff use Energy Star(R)-rated computers, copiers, and fax machines—those that meet the energy-efficiency standards of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Photovoltaic systems power emergency phones in the back country. Because a central corridor of the park was recently designated a wilderness area, Assateague intends to remove 18 miles of conventional power poles and replace them with alternative power sources. Staff are currently exploring solar and wind systems for this purpose.

Assateague has partnered with several Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) programs on multi-year projects. For instance, FEMP’s SAVEnergy audits have assisted with prioritizing cost-effective measures for energy-efficiency upgrades at the park’s headquarters facility. FEMP’s Federal Energy Saver Showcase and Technical Assistance Programs have provided evaluations for renewable-energy and energy-efficiency measures in visitor facility rehabilitation projects.
选址和节水方案: The park has used plastic lumber for duck-blind decking, a deck at the children’s activity center, and recycling-center containers. Assateague is also switching to environmentally safe pressure-treated wood wherever possible.

Modular boardwalks were constructed of lumber salvaged from the demolition of the old Toms Cove bathhouse. This surface is wheelchair accessible, stable to walk on, and easy to remove before a storm.

Crushed clam shells, a waste material from the local seafood industry, replaced asphalt roads.

Solid waste and purchasing

Assateague maintains five collection stations throughout the park for aluminum, glass, and plastic. The headquarters office also recycles cardboard and laser-printer toner cartridges. Nearby Ocean City, Maryland, is following the park’s example in is own recycling program. Recycled-content copy paper is used for photocopiers and laser printers. Approximately 80% of the used tires at the park are recycled. Assateague recycles used motor oil, and antifreeze is filtered and reused onsite. The park also deconstructs and reuses as many building products as possible.

Assateague has organized a "green team" and is working to change its procurement practices to become more selective in purchasing. As part of this effort, the park has minimized or eliminated the purchase and use of toxic products and materials. For example, staff have reduced the use of oil-based asphalt products by using a mixture of road oil and pine resin mixed with sand and oyster shells, on trail and road surfaces. The park has also minimized or eliminated the purchase and use of Styrofoam.

Diversion of Construction & Demolition Waste
Removal of the last remaining wood-framed bathhouse structure, overhead utility lines, and telephone poles began in November 2001. Building materials from these structures have been salvaged and will be reused or recycled by the National Seashore maintenance staff.
室内环境品质:
材料选择: Environmentally safe cleaning products and latex paints are used, whenever possible, to improve indoor air quality. The park is also moving away from using chemical toilets; it is now using valve toilets and treating the waste on site. Smoking is not allowed in park buildings or vehicles.
设计创新: Greening actions at Assateague include using photovoltaic and geothermal power, implementing energy-efficiency measures, using sustainable materials and practices, encouraging habitat restoration, and becoming involved in regional ecotourism planning.

The objective was to develop mobile, cost-effective, environmentally sensitive roadways, parking lots, bathhouses, and visitor contact facilities to serve visitors. The solution includes lightweight cabana structures and prefabricated, passively ventilated vault toilets that can be removed quickly from the beach during pre-storm evacuations. Photovoltaic panels are installed on easily transportable trailers to provide solar-powered rinse showers. Crushed clamshells were used to pave roadways and parking lots. Most of the unsightly overhead utility lines have been removed, and wayside exhibits tell the story of this project to visitors.

This project may serve as a model of sustainable architecture that other Park Service units can emulate. The ultimate hope for these endeavors is that this knowledge is introduced, embraced, and incorporated into the lives, homes, and activities of two million annual visitors after they leave the national seashore.
