The building’s annual energy consumption is expected to be 32% lower than that of a conventional building designed to ASHRAE 90.1-1999 standards. Good insulation in the roof and walls and low-emissivity glazing allowed for a reduction in the size of the building’s mechanical systems. A geothermal water-source heat pump transfers heat rejected from the computer rooms and core spaces to perimeter spaces requiring heat during the long heating season.
Lighting and ventilation analyses were performed to determine the best use of operable windows for natural ventilation and windows, clerestory windows, and lightshelves for daylighting.
Due to the importance of the data collected at this facility, the equipment room was designed with built-in redundancy in the form of UPS backup and a diesel generator that can provide power for three days.
The building equipment for the weather station is in operation at all times. The computers require about four times as much energy as the rest of the building. The energy required to sustain the computer operations is listed under "plug and equipment load" below, and the heating, cooling, and ventilation needed to maintain this process load is identifed under "other" end uses.

Ten percent of the cost of construction went to recycled products, and more than 20% of the cost of construction went to locally manufactured materials. Pressed strawboard was used for all built-in cabinetry throughout the facility.
Diversion of Construction & Demolition Waste
Seventy-five percent of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill. The two most significant strategies were the reuse of asphalt paving as asphalt paving base and the reuse of concrete, masonry, and drywall as fill at another site.
Green Products Used
Recycled-Content Acoustical Ceiling Panels
Recycled-Content Commercial Carpet Tile
Green Strategies
Job Site Recycling
Require a waste management plan from the contractor
Ozone Depleting Substances
Avoid rigid foam insulation made with HCFCs
Avoid sprayed-in foam insulation made with HCFCs
Post-Consumer Recycled Materials
Specify heavy steel framing with highest recycled content
Transportation of Materials
Prefer materials that are sourced and manufactured within the local area

Water Conservation and Use
The site uses no potable irrigation. Using water-efficient fixtures, the design team reduced water use by more than 30% and reduced the use of potable water for wastewater conveyance by more than 50%.
Indoor potable water use: 55,900 gal/yr (212,000 liters/yr)
Outdoor potable water use: 0 gal/yr (0 liters/yr)
Green Strategies
Low-Water-Use Fixtures
Use low-flow toilets
Demand for Irrigation
Select plants for drought tolerance
Sites with Excessive Impacts
Avoid building and infrastructure placement on prime agricultural land
Low-Impact Siting
Avoid building in flood-prone areas |

The facility used low-emitting materials, including adhesives, sealants, paints, carpets, and composite wood. The non-perimeter spaces have controls for lighting, ventilation, and heating and cooling. The facility complies with ASHRAE’s comfort standard (ASHRAE 55-1992), and windows provide both views daylighting.
Green Strategies
Thermal Comfort
Provide occupants with the means to control temperature in their area
Visual Comfort and Light Sources
Provide occupants with control of light in their area
Elimination of Indoor Pollutants
Use only non-solvent-based adhesives
Reduction of Indoor Pollutants
Use only very low or no-VOC paints
Use only very-low-VOC carpet adhesives
Pollutant Management During Construction
Minimize exposure of textiles and uncoated paper to high VOC concentrations |
